Use of Choline-based Eutectic Solvents in Sugar Cane Straw Pretreatment

Many agroindustrial residues are lignocellulosic biomass and, therefore, represent to the biorefineries a potential source of renewable feedstock. In order to exploit this material, it is necessary to pretreat it for disassembling lignin and polysaccharides, facilitating the performance of cellulolytic enzymes responsible for such saccharification, increasing surface area, porosity and reducing material crystallinity. In this context, this study aims to evaluate eutectic solvents as a pretreatment method for sugarcane straw and further enzymatic hydrolysis. For this, nine different eutectic solvents containing choline chloride were considered, which presented better results using malonic, lactic and phenylacetic acids as hydrogen donors.
