OPTIMIZATION OF BIODEGRADATION OF LINEAR ALKYLBENZENE SULFONATE SURFACTANT USING FILAMENTOUS FUNGUS

Favorite this paper

Linear alkylbenzene sulfonated (LAS) is an anionic surfactant used in the formulation of detergents and cleaning materials. LAS is not completely biodegradable and may be toxic to the aquatic environment. The objective of this work is to analyze the efficiency of the filamentous fungus Penicillium Chrysogenum in the biodegradation of LAS through a completely experimental design 22, studying the influence of the concentrations of LAS and glucose on the percentage of biodegradation and biomass production. These assays were incubated on shaker at 25 ° C and 180 rpm for five days for fermentation. The LAS reduction analysis was performed using the methylene blue method (MBAS). The filamentous fungus Penicillium chrysogenum reached a high level of biodegradation of LAS, reaching 99.4%, in contrast to the conventional anaerobic treatments that remove the maximum of 70% of the total surfactants in domestic effluents.
