ISOLATION OF NICKEL RESISTANT MICROORGANISMS FOR BIOSORPTION PROCESSES
Many industries produce and discharge wastes containing metallic compounds , and it can result in redistribution and accumulation of these in terrestrial and aquatic environments, presenting a environmental issues and being able to present toxicological effects. To remove metals ions from aqueous solutions of industrial effluents, physico-chemical methods have been used, wherever, some of them have disadvantages. A alternative process is biosorption, because can use industrial wastes and bacteria as biosorbents of metallic ions. The main purpose was to isolate a bacterial consortium resistant to Ni2+ ions, aiming the decontamination of effluents contaminated by nickel. For that, soil sample were used in the selective isolation. To determine the resistance of the consortia against the metal, the culture was submitted to the minimum inhibitory concentration (MIC) tests. Preliminary results confirm the efficiency of the isolated consortium, proving that its biomass could be used in biosorption processes. The isolated consortia presented resistance to Ni2+ concentrations up to 200 mg.L-1.
