INDUSTRIAL SOLID WASTE AS ADSORBENT FOR PURIFICATION OF KERNEL PALM BIODIESEL OBTAINED BY ENZYMATIC CATALYSIS

In biodiesel production, the purification step is extremely important to remove traces of glycerin and other contaminants (alcohol, catalyst, free fatty acids, soap, salts, and others) from the ester phase. This step is one of the major concerns of the process, since purification is conventionally performed by successive washes with hot water, thus generating a large amount of wastewater that should be adequately treated. Thus, dry washing using suitable adsorbents has been considered as an attractive methodology, although the cost of commercially available adsorbents is still a limitation for application of this procedure. This work assesses the feasibility of using solid waste from the red ceramic industry (chamotte clay) as adsorbent for purification of ethyl biodiesel produced from palm kernel oil via enzymatic route. The efficiency demonstrated by a conventional purification method (aqueous washing) was taken as control parameter.
