Cupriavidus necator produces Poly(3-hydroxybutyrate) (P(3HB)), a biopolyester, as intracellular carbon storage material. This microorganism can utilize different carbon sources, including glycerol. However, it shows quite poor growth on glycerol of which supply has been increasing as a major co-product of biodiesel industries. In this study, C. necator strain DSM 545 was engineered to improve its growth on glycerol, by the introduction of two genes from Escherichia coli: glpF and glpK. We demonstrated the enhanced glycerol utilization ability by C. necator.
