Carotenoids Extraction from Microalgae
Carotenoids that are yellow, orange and red natural pigments have been used mainly in the pharmaceutical and food industry. Its production from microalgae has been consistently evaluated as it is advantageous in comparison to that from fruits and vegetables. The objective of this work was to evaluate the extraction yield of carotenoids from dried commercial microalgae by microwave and orbital shaking, using ethanol water solutions as solvent. Both processes resulted in similar carotenoid extraction yield close to 45%. As future work, carotenoids extraction will be done in in orbital shaker using microalgae dried and fresh cells previously ruptured by ball milling.
