The interest on secondary forests has been growing due to the fact that they occupy up to a third of the area of Neotropical forests. In addition, they have a high potential to actively store carbon in aboveground biomass, partially offsetting carbon emissions from deforestation, forest degradation and other anthropogenic sources. However, the growth and development of secondary forests can be altered by the influence of environmental and anthropogenic drivers, reducing regrowth rates. In this work, we overview the most important factors controlling vegetation regrowth.
