O papel da fragmentação e do efeito de borda na ocorrência e intensidade de incêndios florestais na Amazônia
The Amazon region is home to half of the tropical forests. Historically, the occupation was limited by low soil fertility and distance of the great urban centers. Due to the expansion of timber industries, agriculture and livestock activities, deforestation has intensified significantly in the last decades. In this context, the present study has as main purposes to analyze the role of the fragmentation and edge effect in the occurrence and intensity of fires in forested areas in the Amazon. We used forest cover, heat active fires and FRP - Fire Radiative Power data. We performed landscape metrics; we made the correlation of the variables through linear regression, as well as test the significance of the FRP for different distances from the edges. We found that the fragmentation and edge effect strongly determine the occurrence of fires. Fire intensity was better related to fragmentation. We also identified that the fires are less intense only from the third kilometer from the edges in forest areas. About 95.31% and 98.33% of the fires occurred in the first kilometer from the edges in forest and deforested areas, respectively.
