Forest Fires in protected areas are quite frequent in Cerrado biome. Although some studies have proven its importance over the ecological evolution of the biome, its occurrences are generally associated with environmental problems. An alternative measure to assess such impacts is on behalf of satellite images monitoring. By using geoprocessing tools, the aim of this paper is to identify burnt areas and understand how land coverage and usage dynamics is build up within a year time. By analysing the years ranged between 2009 and 2016, the studied area analysed was the municipality of "Alto Paraíso de Goiás", where two of the protected areas, "PARNA Chapada dos Veadeiros" - The National Park of Chapada dos Veadeiros - and "APA do Pouso Alto" - Pouso Alto Area of Environmental Protection- are located. To meet the objectives of this paper, Landsat images were used with NBR index application to identify burn areas, land coverage and usage classification via photo interpretation and change detection by the method of post- classification. From the gathered data, it has been observed that 70% of the burnt area were indentified as natural vegetation on the following year. In addition, it has also been observed recurrent forest fires on the same area in subsequent years. Therefore, the use of forest fires to transform natural vegetation for human purposes are of low relevance.
