Resumo

Cool pavements are materials that have a reduced surface temperature and tend to release less heat into the atmosphere, therefore being one of the solutions to overcome the problem of urban heat islands. One type of cool pavement is based on surfaces that have high solar reflectance – higher than 25% –, which reduces absorption and consequent heat radiation. For this paper, fifteen samples of sidewalk paving materials commercialized in Brazil were obtained and classified into three categories: concrete blocks, paving stones and hydraulic tiles. Each material exhibited a different spectral signature, and seven samples presented reflectance higher than 25%, qualified as cool pavements. Concrete blocks showed a similar spectral signature in shape. On the other hand, hydraulic tiles and paving stones showed very distinct signatures and, in general, higher reflectance. In general, paving stones show higher reflectance than pavers and hydraulic tile.
