Abstract

This paper presents different tests of methods used to identify the intertidal zone through remote sensing techniques. The tests were made in the Google Earth Engine (GEE) platform, using the JavaScript API and Sentinel-2 data. These consisted in apply different water indices (NDWI, MNDWI and AWEI) and select a threshold that better separates the tidal flat from other features. To compare the results, a supervised classification was applied in the same platform and a dataset of the global distribution of tidal flats were used. The best results were found using the AWEI method, that showed a difference of 6% on average comparing to the supervised classification and 50% on average to the dataset of global tidal flat area.
