Abstract

This report summarizes Moacyr Carlos Possan Junior's PhD thesis titled Models and Exact Methods for Assembly Line Balancing Problems with Assignment Restrictions. The research resulted in the development of exact methods and mathematical models for the scheduling of resource-constrained assembly line balancing problems, providing advancements to the combinatorial optimization field. Three complex multiobjective problems with real-world aspects were examined: (I) the Ergonomics Simple Assembly Line Balancing Problem (ErgoSALBP), (ii) the Multi-manned Assembly Line Balancing Problem (MALBP), and (iii) the Multi-manned Assembly Line Balancing Problem with Assignment Restrictions (MALBP-AR). The methods were developed using a lexicographical approach, adopting Mixed-Integer Linear Programming and Constraint Programming to achieve high-quality solutions within a reasonable computational time. Our methods outperformed previous state-of-the-art approaches, and the findings were published in the field's renowned journals.
