Abstract

We propose, in this coordinated table, to discuss the centrality of the image in the contemporary journalistic ecosystem, considering its ethical, cultural, political, aesthetic, technical and methodological dimensions in a scenario of profound digital reconfigurations. Starting from the understanding that current visualities are not limited to registering the world, but remain endowed with the potential for mobilization and social transformation, we aim to examine how photographs, videos, memes, cartoons, cartoons, animations and other visual expressions operate in contemporary symbolic disputes and in the production of meanings and alterities in journalistic narratives. In this analytical horizon, generative artificial intelligence (AGI) is integrated as a possible analytical complement, a technological vector that tensions and reconfigures, to varying degrees, the processes of automation, platformization, and synthetic generation. Thus, we wish to gather investigations that prioritize the image in its intrinsic complexity, encompassing discussions about, for example, but not only, image and copyright rights, as well as the impacts of algorithmic logics on visuality, when applicable. In addition, the cultural dimension of images is of fundamental importance, an invitation to reflect on how visual narratives shape and are shaped by cosmologies, collective memories, local and global identities and sociabilities
