Abstract

The article discusses the use of artificial intelligence (AI) in the production of alternative texts (descriptions of images for screen readers) for people with disabilities, based on the experience of the communication office of the Court of Justice of Rio Grande do Norte (TJRN), as a journalistic practice in an institutional context. The methodology is based on an experience report (Mussi; Flowers; Almeida, 2021), of a descriptive-explanatory nature (Gil, 2002). The results show that the use of GPT-3.5 speeds up the elaboration of a first version of the text, but has limitations in the hierarchy of information, in the reading of the context and in the categorization of images. In addition, it requires financial support, training time and technical knowledge. It is concluded that AI acts as a support to journalistic production, but requires human review to ensure accuracy, pertinence and accessibility.
