Abstract

Severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus-2 (SARS-CoV-2) has posed a significant global health challenge since the beginning of 2020, causing coronavirus disease-2019 (COVID-19). The pathology of the disease is characterized by rapid viral replication, which leads to an exaggerated immune response and severe lung inflammation. Effective antiviral treatments for COVID-19 are still required, particularly for patients with severe symptoms.
Here, we study the interaction of nanoparticles (NPs), developed by the group of Dr. Fabio Formiga from Fiocruz-Recife, with potential respiratory treatment, with model membranes representing pulmonary surfactant membranes. Giant Unilamellar Vesicles (GUVs) of different lipid compositions were assayed and observed by optical microscopy. We show the dynamic results promoted on GUVs by the NPs.
