Abstract

Recent advances in protein structure prediction, cryo-EM, and large-scale structural

data resources have transformed biology from an era of structural scarcity to one of

structural abundance. The Protein Databank in Europe (PDBe) resources such

as AlphaFold Database, PDBe-Knowledgebase, and 3D-Beacons now provide broad

access to experimental and predicted macromolecular structures, together with

confidence metrics, annotations, and programmatic routes for large-scale analysis.

Converting this abundance into biological insight requires scalable analysis methods,

integrated functional annotation, robust model validation, practical training, and

equitable global access. These developments are reshaping how researchers interpret

protein function, investigate disease mechanisms, and address major challenges in

health, food security, antimicrobial resistance, and beyond. The value of this structural

revolution will be measured not by the number of models available but by how

effectively they help researchers ask better questions, test mechanisms, and make

decisions grounded in molecular evidence.
