CULTURAL HERITAGE OBJECTS STUDIED WITH MULTISPECTRAL NON-DESTRUCTIVE ANALYSIS

Favorite this paper

Technical scientific researches with multispectral non-destructives analysis are applied in the study of art and cultural heritage objects and now routinely performed in Brazil
and are growing each day. Since 2012 the Applied Physics Group with accelerators of the Physics Institute of the University of São Paulo has been working in collaboration
with the museums and institute of the university: Museu Paulista (MP – USP), Museu de Arte Contemporênea (MAC-USP), Museu de Arqueologia e Ethnologia (MAEUSP)
e Instituto de Estudos Brasileiros (IEB-USP). Several methodologies have been applied for characterization and analysis of the museums objects. The processes used
by the group are imaging, element and compositional characterization that enable understanding the materials and techniques used in the creative process and the
manufacture of objects. Imagens with visible light, infrared reflectography (IR), fluorescence visible with ultraviolet radiation (UV), light tangential and digital
radiography are used to examine and document artistic and cultural heritage objects. Techniques that use ion beam analysis such as "Particle Induced X-Ray Emission"
(PIXE), "Rutherford Backscattering" (RBS) and Ion Beam Induced Luminescence (IBIL), are applied to determine the elements and the chemical compounds in the
surface layers. Portable equipment with Energy Dispersive X-Ray Fluorescence (XRF) and Raman Spectroscopy are used for analyses in “situ” at the museums. The results of these analyzes are providing valuable information on the manufacturing process and has provide new information of the objects of the different museums. The studies are being carried out systematically in order to produce information that are useful to historians, curators, conservationists and restorers to the expansion of knowledge in art history, conservation science but also in determining and defining the technical and preservation conditions material heritage. In this paper will be presented some examples of analyzes that is being carried with the accelerator at LAMFI [1] of the Physics Institute and with the portable equipment’s. The use of ion beam analysis and multi-techniques with portable equipment in collaboration of the museum’s collections is unique in Brazil and are enriching the knowledgement of the cultural heritage.
