Development and Evaluation of Sports Integrity Teaching Materials for Youth Table Tennis Players Based on Aspirational Ethics —Using Value Clarification and Moral Dilemma Theory in Moral Education

In Japanese competitive sports, various issues such as illegal gambling and para-doping have emerged, highlighting the importance of sports integrity. A review of previous studies shows that although ethics education in competitive sports is recognized as crucial, its practical implementation and the development of teaching materials remain insufficient. Moreover, while the etymology of “integrity” includes notions of “wholeness” and “consistency,” traditional sports ethics education has primarily focused on preventive ethics, which emphasizes prohibiting misconduct (i.e., “what not to do”). As a result, there has been limited exploration of educational approaches grounded in aspirational ethics, which encourages athletes to reflect on what kind of athlete they aspire to be and to explore their ideals and values. Meanwhile, moral education in Japanese schools has placed increasing emphasis on balancing three instructional approaches—value transmission, value clarification, and value conflict to foster deeper critical thinking on ethical issues. These methods offer valuable insights for constructing sports integrity education based on aspirational ethics. Against this backdrop, the present study focuses on the recent trend of discussion-based moral education in schools. We developed workshops that integrate value clarification and value conflict activities, and propose new educational materials and instructional methods anchored in aspirational ethics. As a result of the training program conducted for youth table tennis players, it provided them with an opportunity to reassess their own values.
