Complexed polyelectrolytes, PECs, when hydrated, offer a wide range of properties, from liquid-like to glassy. The dynamics of these systems have been well characterized, as have the effects of adding salt to dope or plasticize PECs (“saloplasticity”). After a brief introduction on what controls PEC properties, this talk will present three recent potential applications. First, because dry PECs have a strong affinity for water, their use as desiccants for efficiently drying solvents will be presented. PECs may be regenerated at relatively low temperatures (slightly more than 100 oC). Second, with the view that stoichiometric (i.e. charge balanced) PECs have much in common with polyzwitterions, the application of glassy PECs to prevent/reduce biofouling will be presented. Finally, an underwater adhesive suitable for use as a pressure sensitive adhesive has been made using antibiotics and polyelectrolytes.
