Following Sociodiscursive Interactionism (ISD) (Bronckart, [1997]1999), and within the scope of Text Linguistics, text production implies selecting and adapting a genre model, whose general structure depends on the human activity to which it is associated (Bronckart, 2008; Miranda, 2012). In addition, it is argued that texts are made up of different segments classified as discursive types (Bronckart, [1997]1999), regardless of the genre to which they belong. Discursive types are both psychological and discursive operations, corresponding abstractly to psychological archetypes and, on a concrete level, to linguistic types that materialize thought operations. This study’s main goal is to demonstrate that linguistic configuration of the discursive types is not totally random, but that it partly depends on the genre of each text. Therefore, it was carried out a descriptive textual analysis of a corpus consisting of 20 European Portuguese written texts that belong to two different genres: research article and package insert. A top-down approach (Voloshinov, [1929]1977) was adopted, which focused on the interaction of human activities, text genres and discursive types. Main results include the following: i) the linguistic configuration of discursive types depends on the favoured contents within a specific genre, which, in turn, are regulated by the activities in which the genre is used; ii) while in the research article, interactive speech is marked by the presence of linguistic forms that refer to the author, in the package insert, those forms refer to the reader; iii) teaching these genres’ regularities allows not only learning the language that is used in different spheres of activity but also the linguistic exercise of reasoning in Portuguese in different ways. Keywords: Sociodiscursive Interactionism; text genres; discursive types
