Resumo

Introduction: Menstrual Poverty is related to the lack of access to basic hygiene items for individuals who menstruate. The absence of conditions that provide for these care needs undermines the dignity of the individual, as it directly interferes with various daily activities, such as socialization. Furthermore, the first menstruation is estimated to occur between the ages of 10 and 13, a period of intense school interaction. However, studies indicate that the lack of resources has a negative impact on academic performance, given that one in every ten girls around the world misses school when menstruating. Menstrual flow is part of the natural reproductive cycle, being a product of the shedding of the inner walls of the uterus when fertilization has not occurred. Therefore, self-awareness and knowledge of one's own body are essential to dispel misconceptions about menstruation. Objective: The aim is to shed light on this issue, both for the professional enrichment of future medical professionals and for the population in need of assistance. Since 2014, the United Nations has recognized menstrual hygiene access as a public health and human rights issue. Additionally, the goal is to demystify and clarify the natural physiological process of individuals with uteruses, which is often considered taboo in many cultures. Method: Students were educated through a lecture on the topic to be equipped to discuss, provide support, and participate in the distribution of donated sanitary products to the population. To maximize outreach, the campaign divided students into groups to cover different Basic Health Units (UBS) within the municipality of Catanduva. This approach allowed for the explanation of the theme, clarification of common doubts, guidance on different available products for managing menstrual flow for greater comfort, and encouragement for seeking medical advice in cases of irregular or excessive menstruation. Results: Despite being a regionally focused initiative, the action demonstrated significant relevance, as evidenced by the community's interest and collaboration on the topic. Conclusion: Given the high number of menstruating individuals lacking access to essential hygiene items, this project's primary aim is to raise awareness about the issue, mobilize more individuals, break down taboos surrounding menstruation, and encourage individuals to seek information about their own bodily functions. Finally, it is important to emphasize the significance of conducting medical campaigns beyond hospital settings to directly reach the population and alleviate potential apprehensions and anxieties about healthcare environments, thus promoting overall well-being.
