Introduction: Methylphenidate is a central nervous system stimulant medication often prescribed for children and adults diagnosed with Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD). Its synthesis took place in 1944, in Switzerland, being patented in 1954 and made available in Brazil in 1998, under the commercial name of Ritalin. However, its use has expanded beyond this indication, being sought after by people who want to improve their cognitive capacity and performance in everyday and academic activities. Objective: The objective of this work is to analyze the risks and consequences of the indiscriminate use of methylphenidate by students, to identify factors that lead to the inappropriate use of medication and propose measures to raise awareness and prevent abuse, emphasizing the importance of pharmaceutical care in this context. Methods: In this study, the methodology consisted of carrying out a bibliographic review on the indiscriminate use of methylphenidate and its references in physical and mental health. The selected data sources included databases such as PubMed, Scielo, Google Scholar, as well as official reports and technical documents relevant to the topic. The keywords used were "methylphenidate", "indiscriminate use", "students", "Ritalin" and "side effects". The studies were carefully selected, emphasizing those that addressed the use of methylphenidate, its effects, reflexes and consequences of inappropriate use. Critical review can identify potential side effects and ethical issues related to use without proper prescription. Result: The indiscriminate use of methylphenidate has been associated with health risks, including cardiovascular problems, sleep disorders, loss of appetite, psychiatric effects and abuse potential. The academic environment is one of the main motivations for inappropriate use, where students seek to improve performance and concentration in studies. Conclusion: The population's awareness of the dangers of indiscriminate use of drugs, especially stimulants such as methylphenidate, becomes accepted through proper education. It is crucial to highlight the protection of stricter supervision by health surveillance and more precise professional guidance. However, there is a need for further studies on the subject.
