Chronic non-communicable diseases (NCDs), such as obesity, associated with poor eating habits of fruits and vegetables. According to Brazil’s biodiversity, Amazon region has a great variety of therapeutic plants rich in bioactive compounds which improve human health. In this context, taperebá (Spondias mombin L.), is a dark yellow and fragrant fruit, rich in carotenoids, stands out for its antioxidant potential and bioactive compounds. We aimed to evaluate effects of oral taperebá extract supplementation on body composition and biochemical parameters in obese rats. Forty male rats aged 90 days old (PN90) were subdivided: 1) Control (CS, n=10), received commercial diet and gavage saline, 2) High-fat saline (HFS, n=10) received high fat diet (HF with 45% of fat) and gavage with saline, 3) High-fat+100 Tapereba, received HF diet and gavage with 100 mg/kg/day of tapereba extract (HFTAP100, n=10) and 4) High-fat+200 Tapereba, received HF diet and gavage with 200 mg/kg/day of tapereba extract (HFTAP200, n=10). At PN120 (120 days old) body composition and serum biochemical markers were analyzed. At PN120, HFS presented higher percentage and content of body fat (+82.6% and +73.9% vs CS, respectively, p<0.05). HFS, HFTAP100 and HFTAP200 showed lower lean mass (-16.6%, -12% and -13.8% vs CS, respectively, p<0.05), without change in bone area, body mineral content and body mineral density when compared to CS. HFS, HFTAP100 and HFTAP200 presented lower pyruvic glutamic transaminase (-28.8%, -32.7% and -43% vs CS, respectively, p<0.05) and HFTAP100 presented higher glutamic oxaloacetic transaminase (+43.1% vs CS, p<0.05), without change in alkaline phosphatase amoung groups. HFS, HFTAP100 and HFTAP200 showed lower urea (-20%, -21.8% and -18.3% vs CS, respectively, p<0.05) and lower creatinine (-29.2%, -36.5% and -31.7% vs CS, respectively, p<0.05). Thus, tapereba supplementation protected against increases in body fat, despite a reduction in lean mass, accompanied by a reduction in urea and creatinine.
