Transcriptomic profile of ferroptosis in sepsis

Sepsis is an abnormal systemic reaction to an infection which has a high morbidity rate, divided in some severity stages, like Systemic Inflammatory Response Syndrome (SIRS), sepsis and septic shock (SS). There are 331 ferroptosis-related genes (FerGs) which play a role in programmed cell death triggered by the accumulation of reactive oxygen species and dependent on the presence of excess iron. Experimental evidence suggests that sepsis induced by cecal ligation and puncture or lipopolysaccharide in mice can be relieved by a ferroptosis inhibitor by decreasing inflammatory cytokines. Although several studies have indicated a correlation between sepsis and FerGs, the role of FerGs in sepsis is still unclear.
