Mercury (Hg) is a heavy metal and the third most toxic element on the planet. Methylmercury (MeHg) intoxication is a public health concern in endemic regions of Brazil, especially in the Amazon. Accumulating evidence points to MeHg deleterious effects on cardiovascular and atherosclerotic risk, which may be aggravated by the obesity pandemic that occurs even in the Amazon region.
