Wedelolactone Revertes Acute Kidney Injury Resulting From Bothrops jararacussu envenomation

Snakebites are considered neglected tropical diseases by the World Health Organization. Bothrops snakes are responsible for almost 90% of snakebites in South America, representing a serious public health problem in tropical countries due to their high morbidity and mortality. Acute kidney injury (AKI) is defined as the sudden loss of kidney function in hours or days and is one of the main complications resulting from snakebites. Wedelolactone (WED) is a metabolite derived from Eclipta prostrata leaves, able to neutralizing the myotoxic, proteolytic and hemorrhagic activities of B. jararacussu venom and its toxins, being a treatment option for kidney damage resulting from envenomation.
