Viral inoculation in the amniotic fluid as a model for Zika virus vertical transmission

An important observation regarding the phenotypes found in congenital zika virus syndrome is that the majority of patients develop anterior, prosencephalic, malformations. We here hypothesized that the anterior preference is formed because ZIKV uses an anterior pathway for CNS infection, the amniotic fluid, the olfactory epithelium and olfactory bulb.
