VENTILATOR-INDUCED LUNG INJURY PROMOTES CEREBRAL OXIDATIVE STRESS AND COGNITIVE CHANGES IN HEALTHY WISTAR RATS

Mechanical ventilation (MV) is an indispensable strategy in the treatment of critically ill patients, which aimed to provide adequate gas exchange. However, the use of high tidal volumes during MV may cause damage to the lungs. The distension of the alveolar units provides a mechanical stretch that causes the release of inflammatory mediators and redox imbalance. The activation of immune system cells associated with the production of inflammatory mediators can increase lung injury and potentially cause damage to other organs.
