Resumo

Metabolic syndrome (MS) is a public health problem characterized by three or more metabolic disorders, e.g., hypertension, diabetes, and overweight/obesity. Caused by a variety of poor eating habits, such as excessive consumption of high-fructose foods and often associated with sedentary lifestyle. In addition, recent studies have shown that long term fructose consumption impairs cognitive function and increases the risk of anxiety development. Aerobic exercise, such as swimming or running, has been shown to have beneficial effects on the metabolism of people with MS and also in experimental models, reducing body weight and improving glucose tolerance and lipid profile. Physical exercise has a great potential for being accessible and inexpensive therapy for the general population.
