Resumo

Multiple sclerosis (MS) is an inflammatory demyelinating disease of the central nervous system, still without cure, which affects the visual system in 80% of cases. Synaptic abnormalities are among the main pathologic hallmarks of the disease and appear to involve an activity imbalance between excitatory and inhibitory transmission that results in synaptic loss. Despite the synaptic damage of MS, available treatments only aim to suppress inflammation. Pranlukast (PLK), an anti-inflammatory used in the treatment of asthma, has been shown to have effects on remyelination, neuroprotection and modulation of signaling pathways related to synaptic plasticity. However, its therapeutic impact on MS is still unknown.
