Neuroinflammation and cognitive impairment after experimental pneumococcal meningitis - an in vivo PET study

Bacterial meningitis is a devastating central nervous system (CNS) infection with acute and long-term neurological consequences, including cognitive impairment. Despite the advances in treatment and vaccinations, bacterial meningitis-induced cognitive decline remains one of the most important morbidity affecting over 400,000 people annually. We hypothesize that microglia activation is a crucial factor in triggering cognitive impairment in meningitis survivors.
