Resumo

Major depressive disorder (MDD) is a common psychiatric illness, globally affecting 5% of adults according to the World Health Organization (WHO). MDD is a complex disease, involving both genetic and environmental factors, receiving a diagnosis when the individual has persistent low mood and lack of interest or pleasure in previously rewarding or enjoyable activities. Sirtuin 1 (SIRT1), a NAD-dependent histone deacetylase, is involved in various cellular processes, including apoptosis, genomic stability, gene expression regulation, cell survival and aging, cell cycle, tumorigenesis and metabolism regulation. Research has reported that Human SIRT1 has over 100 interactions with other cell components, being involved in numerous processes. Several studies have explored the potential link between SIRT1 and MDD, primarily focusing on its involvement in neuroplasticity and the regulation of stress responses. While there is ongoing research on the role of SIRT1 in various health conditions, including mental health, it is important to note that the connection between SIRT1 and depression is still being investigated and understood.
