Visual stimuli in the current trial tend to exhibit Serial Dependence (SD), meaning they are reproduced more closely to the previous trial. The memory carrying this information, however, is hardly detected using electroencephalogram (EEG). Silent memory traces have been proposed as a potential mechanism. These traces can be revealed by using a nonspecific high-energy sensory stimulus (henceforth ping) to activate the network and uncover information stored in synaptic weights. It remains unclear which specific features from the stimuli the ping should mimic, and whether this applies to tasks not explicitly engaging memory processes. To investigate these aspects we first examined the impact of a motion ping in behavior with an online experiment. Subsequently, we conducted an in-person experiment using a blocked design with concomitant EEG recordings, which included the aforementioned online-tested ping, a more non-specific ping, and control blocks.
