Investigating WFDC1 expression pattern during chicken ontogenesis by In Situ Hybridization

WFDC1 is a highly conserved ancient gene encoding a small, secreted protein present in the extracellular matrix with critical roles in angiogenesis, cancer, immune response and tissue repair. WFDC1 upregulation has been associated with changes in endothelial biomarkers, cardiac hypertrophy and cardiac failure. However, its specific role during normal cardiovascular development, adult homeostasis and disease is still unknown. In this regard, characterization studies of the expression pattern of this gene during development can bring valuable results.
