Inside the painful mind: exploring long-term brain alterations in fibromyalgia

Fibromyalgia (FM) is a complex chronic pain condition characterized by diffuse musculoskeletal pain, sensory hypersensitivity, cognitive disturbances, and affective symptoms. It affects a significant portion of the population, with a prevalence ranging from 2% to 8%. The condition involves various autonomic, perceptual, cognitive, and emotional changes. While there is growing interest in neuroanatomical studies related to chronic pain, our understanding of cortical morphology in FM patients is still limited, and information regarding changes in cortical gyri is scarce.
