INOSINE PROMOTES MORPHOLOGICAL AND FUNCTIONAL IMPROVEMENTS AFTER COMPRESSIVE SPINAL CORD INJURY IN MICE

Traumatic spinal cord injury (SCI) is one of the most common and aggressive disease of the central nervous system (CNS). The SCI triggers neuron and glial cell death, followed by some important events in the distal stump of damaged axons. In the field of molecular therapies to promote regeneration and neuroprotection, inosine, a purine derived from deamination of adenosine, arises as a potential treatment for SCI, successfully used on CNS injuries, and even in PNS after a sciatic nerve crush promoting and accelerating axonal regeneration, neuroprotection, reduction of macrophage/microglia around the lesion core and also attenuating secondary events.
