Effects of Ayahuasca or Dextroketamine single dose on posttraumatic stress disorder: a randomized, double-blinded study

Posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) can emerge from exposure to concrete or imminent risk of death, injury, or sexual violence. Although symptoms comprise cognitive, mood and behavioral impairments that lead to significant decrease in life quality, currently available treatments are often ineffective. Recently, studies have been evaluating the efficacy of hallucinogenic substances as an alternative for treatment of different psychiatric disorders, and preliminary data suggest a therapeutic potential of ketamine in the treatment of PTSD. However, ayahuasca has not yet been tested in a clinical context for the treatment of this disorder, although it has shown promising results in the treatment of comorbidities such as depression and anxiety.
