Resumo

Fetal alcohol syndrome (FAS) is caused by the consumption of alcohol by the mother during the gestational period, and directly affects initial and fundamental processes of development, permanently damaging brain structures, including the hippocampal region. In Brazil, it is estimated that, for every 1000 live births, 38 children are born with FAS. However, this number is believed to be underreported. FAS does not yet have effective therapies and treatments, which may be related to a lack of descriptive studies of alcohol mechanisms in the central nervous system.
