Resumo

The estuarine region near Vitória city (Espírito Santo - BR) has been influenced by a large complex of industries working on iron ore processing. They have been emitting atmospheric particulate matter (PM), which contains a range of metallic components. The settleable PM (SePM) is involved in bioaccumulation and biomagnification processes in aquatic trophic chains, evidencing air-to-water cross-contamination, and it has been reported as responsible for inducing sublethal damage in different aquatic organisms. Crustaceans are known as particularly sensitive to metal contamination and for accumulating toxic and trace elements in polluted environments. Macrobrachium rosenbergii is a well-known shrimp specie that is considered relatively resistant to pollutants, which allows for the assessment of the potential effects of contaminants.
