Resumo

Early and excessive ethanol consumption is one of the strongest predictors of addiction, resulting in a four-fold increase in likelihood for individuals who start drinking before the age of 15. This pattern of consumption can negatively impact cognitive development and is a risk factor for the onset of psychiatric disorders associated with ethanol use. The early ethanol consumption may cause persistent neurobiological alterations in the prefrontal cortex (PFC), amygdala (AMG) and hippocampus (HIP), which are regions crucially involved in the control of several emotional states and in the regulation of the activity of the hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal (HPA) axis. Physical exercise (PE) can be an alternative for the treatment of alcohol use disorders. Further, PE can relief the alcohol withdrawal symptoms and the neurological problems associated with it.
