Resumo

Breast cancer (BC) is the most common cancer type worldwide and the second cause of death among women. The base excision repair (BER) pathway is activated for oxidative DNA damage repair, leading to a significant reduction of chemotherapy efficacy, and promoting drug resistance. Advanced stages of tumors present hypoxia areas, where cancer cells reprogram their gene expression profile for survival in this microenvironment, which results in acquiring drug resistance. An important issue in chemotherapy studies is identifying the molecular mechanisms through in vitro cellular models and comparing them to clinical data for could help in pre-clinical tests and posteriorly apply them in therapy.
