Chronic consumption of hyperpalatable/hypercaloric foods has been associated with memory impairment in obesity. Thus, the integration between peripheral and central inflammation may play a significant role in the negative effects of an obesogenic environment on memory, especially in key areas which are vulnerable to nutritional stress, such as the hippocampus. However, there is a lack of evidence regarding the effects of obesity-related inflammation associated with poor diet consumption on certain neurotransmission systems involved with memory regulation, such as the glutamatergic system.
