Biases in binaural hearing on the azimuth axis: An experimental and modeling approach

Identifying the location of a sound within our surroundings is one of the primal concerns thinking about survival, being a prey or a predator. Although this sound cue is presented in a complex environment with echoes, terrain attenuations, and complex sound waves with multiple frequencies, the system can be reduced to a simplistic approach using headphones, interaural time differences (ITD), interaural level differences (ILD), and pure tones as a head start to understand such a complex system. In previous experiments, we discovered response bias when the subject was trying to locate peripheral sounds that lead to a stereotyped response around 50º deg.
