APPLICATION OF NUCLEAR TECHNIQUES IN DRUG REPOSITIONING RESEARCH

Mucositis is a chemotherapy-induced complication resulting in an inflammatory process affecting the mucosal surfaces of the gastrointestinal tract. Drug repurposing is a strategy to identify new uses for drugs beyond the scope of the original indication and can reveal new avenues for treating diseases. In this sense, statins have been the subject of numerous studies aimed at their repositioning, in addition to hypolipidemic activity, they have anti-inflammatory and immunomodulatory activity, desirable for the treatment of mucositis. There is a need for research on the evaluation and effectiveness of statins and the use of the arsenal of reliable in vivo modalities to assess gastrointestinal toxicity and treatment effectiveness is still a challenge.
