The challenging Atlantic Forest successional stages classification using law definitions

The Atlantic Forest Biome law implements forest use restrictions based on successional stages, with advanced stages receiving more protection. We aimed to compare law-established successional stages using field and remote sensing (RS) variables. Half law parameters could be used, a more thorough inventory would be necessary to cover all parameters. The lack of area definition and the canopy height are major problems identified. We suggest a resolution review by state using a well-defined minimum sampling area, only a few parameters for classification, including diversity, and classification per phytophysiognomy. The clarity in the law interpretation is key to protecting the Atlantic Forest.
