Abstract

The spineless cactus (Opuntia ficus indica) is known for its survival in extreme weather and its propagation capacity could be served as a good alternate feeding option for ruminanats. The study was undertaken to evaluate the effect of the cactus as a fodder on productive performance of cows at Central Cattle Breeding Farm of BAIF, Pune over a period of 90 days. A total of 14 HF pure and crossbred cows were divided into two groups equally based on their average body weights and 30 days post-partum production parameters. The ICAR standard feeding regimen was followed for all the cows except for the cows in experimental group which were supplemented with cactus feeding at 8 kg per day per cow with other feed, fodders and feeding supplements. A body weight and production parameters data were analyzed using an independent t-test. The means for daily milk yield, fat, protein, solids-not fat, total body and daily weight gain for the experimental group were 9.61 (kg), 4.16 (%), 4.21 (%), 8.63 (kg), 59.43 (kg) and 660 gm/day, respectively. Similarly, the means for the respective parameters in control group were 6.92 (kg), 4.64 (%), 3.89 (%), 8.53 (%), 54.71 (kg) and 608 gm/day. The differences among the experimental and control group were not statistically significant, but visible difference exist among the groups. The cactus exhibited its acceptance and high palatability without any adverse effectswith improved productiveperformance in cows.
