Abstract

This study evaluated the metabolomics profiling, antibiotic and antibiofilm activities of the ethyl acetate (EAE) and ethanolic (EE) extracts from aerial parts of Polygonum hydropiperoides. Metabolomics profiling was carried out by HPLC-(-) ESI-MSn. Antibiotic activity was determined by Minimal Inhibitory Concentration (MIC) and Minimal Bactericidal Concentration against Staphylococcus aureus subsp. aureus (ATCC® 29213™ and ATCC® 25923™) and methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus 1485279 strains. Antibiofilm was performed by the inhibition of adhesion in polystyrene surface against these same strains. HPLC-(-) ESI-MSn detected 18 substances belong to phenolic acids or flavonoids classes, being galloyl glucose the major compound in both extracts. EAE and EE were active against all strains with MIC of 1.25 mg.mL-1 (bacteriostatic effect), and able to inhibit the biofilm adhesion. Results suggest that P. hydropiperoides is a natural source of substances with antibiotic effect and can be an alternative option to prevent the biofilm formation in medical and hospital supplies.
