We compared the cost of glucosamine and chondroitin-containing pharmaceutical dosage forms
manufactured by pharmaceutical laboratories and compounding pharmacies. The costs of glucosamine
sulfate 1500 mg (G1500) as powder manufactured by seven pharmaceutical laboratories were investigated.
For the association of G1500 and chondroitin sulfate 1200 mg (C1200) powder and hard capsule
manufactured by three pharmaceutical laboratories were investigated. The costs found to the respective
compounded preparations (CP) were compared. CP presented lower cost in relation to the manufactured.
The cost of G1500 powder was 129 % lower than the manufactured. Also, the values of compounded
powder containing G1500 plus C1200 were on average 186 % lower than the manufactured. For
compounded capsules the cost was 64 % lower. It was evident that compounding pharmacies offer
affordable value to the patients in the treatment of osteoarthritis with the association of G1500 and C1200 or
even only G1500 regardless of the pharmaceutical form.
