Ionic liquids (IL) can solubilize amphipathic molecules and, therefore, act as ideal solvents for topical and transdermal delivery of protein-based drugs. The IL molecules are likely to slip through the fatty compounds that make up the skin cells, creating small transient openings through which bioactive molecules (carried by the IL) can permeate. In this work, the production of a gel formulation integrating the ionic liquid choline geranate as a facilitator for the cutaneous permeation of lytic bacteriophage particles to Staphylococcus subsp. was pursued. Stabilization of the bacteriophage particles was performed with verification of the gel viscosity, spreadability and pH, and concentration of permeated bacteriophages. The formulated gel was able to promote the transdermal permeation of bacteriophage particles and is suitable for the treatment of infections caused by Staphylococcus subsp.
