Resumo

Understanding the principles of the circular economy is essential for fostering more conscious citizens regarding resource use and waste generation. However, in educational settings, this topic is still often addressed through theoretical and limited interactive approaches. In this context, this study aimed to develop and implement Sementinha Circular, an educational game designed to teach circular economy concepts to children through active learning strategies.

The game was adapted from the Beer Game, originally developed at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT). Unlike the original version, which is based on a linear supply chain focused on extraction, production, and disposal, the proposed game emphasizes the unsustainability of this model and incorporates circular economy principles aimed at reducing waste generation.

Through playful activities, children are encouraged to critically reflect on production processes and appropriate waste management practices. As highlighted by Ramos, Knaul, and Rocha (2020), game characteristics can influence children's behavior, reinforcing their potential for environmental awareness. To facilitate understanding, the rules were simplified, the number of rounds was reduced, and the language was adapted to the target audience. Participants assume roles within a circular supply chain (Manufacturer, Distributor, Market, and Household), managing product flows according to changing demands. One of the game's main innovations is the incorporation of circularity, in which generated waste returns to the manufacturer for reuse, recycling, or recovery, enabling children to visualize the functioning of a circular system.

The development process took place over four months and involved children aged 9 to 12 years in the validation of the materials. Two pilot studies (n = 9) supported adjustments before the final implementation with 36 students. Pre- and post-game activities, conducted through drawings and written reflections, indicated improvements in the understanding of material flows, waste generation, and the importance of reinserting waste into production systems, as well as increased engagement and critical reflection. Therefore, Sementinha Circular proved to be an effective and meaningful tool for environmental education.
